An Epic Art Installation

Edgewood Partners Insurance Company (a.k.a. Epic) had just moved into the top two floors of a modern office space in downtown San Francisco. They needed help with an internal project – decorating their newly remodeled facility.

Infinity ExamplesThe proposed theme was photography. To get everyone involved, the images – primarily San Francisco and California – were to be supplied by employees.

They were looking for a cost-effective way to print and display a large number of photographic images. Did Phillips Design have any ideas on how to do this, other than a conventional print, mat, glass, frame and hang solution?

We certainly did. In fact, we had an ideal solution – it’s called Infinity.

Infinity is a full color, stretched fabric with a silicone edge that presses into an aluminum frame. It is light weight, extremely durable (washable, in fact) and easy to hang. The texture of the fabric is very forgiving, allowing enlargement of digital images way beyond what is possible on a smooth surface. One of the great advantages of this process is that multiple images can be combined into a single print, making installation even simpler.

Most of the images were black and white and came from a variety of different cameras, in a wide range of resolutions. In order to get consistent tones, all grayscale images were processed to a common CMYK value before printing. Color images were enhanced and saturated to get maximum color.

The design and production process included measurements and elevations of walls, review and selection of images, elevation layouts for review, and Photoshop processing and retouching. Many images were given a photographic edge treatment to create a white border effect.

Full size test swatches of every image were ordered prior to placing the final order. Phillips Design did final assembly and delivery, a professional framer did the hanging of a total of thirty five large-format prints.

The result? A tasteful office space – nicely adorned with dramatic and beautiful imagery – proudly provided by the employees themselves.

A special thanks goes to Marcia Packlick of Packlick/Lagueux for referring Phillips Design to this project.
